My journey with Girls on the Run began last fall, at the start of my sophomore year at the University of Richmond. Being a part of this program has given me so many opportunities, from stepping outside of campus culture to mentoring some incredible girls in the community. It has been an extremely rewarding experience—one that I will carry with me for years to come.
I served at the Woodman West location last season, helping coach a team of six young girls. Though we were a small group, we were mighty. At our first practice, the girls helped me pick my GOTR name: Powerful Priscila, a name I take pride in saying. I was definitely nervous at the start of the season, unsure of what to expect, but the organization made it so easy. They provided all the tools, support, and guidance I needed to be successful and soon, my confidence began to grow. Girls on the Run has made a lasting impact on my life, far beyond what I initially expected.
One practice I will always cherish was on Halloween. As I arrived, I heard an excited voice call out, "Look, Powerful Priscila! I dressed up as you for Halloween today!" I turned to see Zesty Zenab with my infamous low middle bun, edges laid perfectly, and the biggest smile plastered across her face. The girls had decided to dress up as the coaches for Halloween practice! In that moment, I truly realized how much they looked up to us. Being able to serve as a role model made me even more grateful to be part of the Girls on the Run mission.

Another unforgettable moment was crossing the finish line at the 5K. It was a bittersweet experience. We had trained for it all season, so it was definitely rewarding, but also sad knowing it meant the program was coming to an end. Seeing the girls jump up and down was incredibly touching. Watching them proudly put on their medals, I felt a sense of accomplishment. Not just for them, but for myself as well. It was my first time completing a 5K, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
With Valentine's Day approaching, I can't help but reflect on the love and support we shared throughout the season. The bond I formed with my team was built on encouragement and care, a true testament to what love in action looks like.
For anyone considering becoming a Girls on the Run coach, my advice is simple: just go for it! You will learn just as much from the girls as they will from you. The sense of community, joy, and fulfillment you gain from this experience is unmatched. My practices became a highlight of my fall semester, something I looked forward to amidst the busyness of college life.
This was only the first of many seasons to come. I can’t wait to see what the spring season has in store!
